Bank payments and instant bank verification
In this article
Once Stripe is connected, customers can pay your invoices straight from their bank account (ACH). Before a bank account can pay, the customer has to prove it's theirs. They can do it in about a minute by signing in to their bank through Stripe (Verify instantly), or wait for a small deposit and type in what they see (Verify with a deposit). There is nothing to switch on in BizBaby: both options are offered to every customer.
How customers pay by bank
- You send an invoice by email or text.
- The customer opens it in their customer portal. If they have nothing saved, they choose Add a bank account and type the account number and the 9-digit routing number.
- BizBaby confirms "Bank account added" and asks them to verify it, with a Verify now button.
- Once the account is verified, the customer can pay with it, now and next time.
A customer who pays an invoice with a bank account that isn't verified yet goes through instant verification as part of paying, and the payment is made as soon as verification is done.
The two ways to verify
The customer sees Verify your bank account with two choices. Bank verification is handled by Stripe, and BizBaby never receives the customer's online-banking password.
| Choice | How it works | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Verify instantly | The customer signs in to their bank through Stripe. Stripe makes a $0.50 test payment that is refunded automatically. | Usually about a minute. |
| Verify with a deposit | The customer clicks Send verification deposit. Stripe sends a small deposit to the account. The customer comes back and enters either the statement code (6 characters, starting with SM) or the two deposit amounts, then clicks Verify account. | 1 to 2 business days for the deposit to show. |
If the customer chose the deposit, the screen tells them which to enter: Confirm the statement code or Confirm the deposits. They get 10 tries for a code and 3 tries for amounts.
After a bank payment is made
Bank payments don't clear at once like cards. While the bank is moving the money, the payment shows as pending. When it completes, the invoice is paid as usual. If the bank rejects it, the payment is marked failed and the customer gets the Payment failed email. That email is one of the built-in automations on the Automations page.
What bank payments cost
Bank payments are cheaper than cards. See Payouts and fees explained.
If you followed the old Financial Connections steps
An earlier version of this guide asked you to click Setup Inst. Verification in business settings and fill in a Financial Connections form in Stripe. That button is gone. Instant verification is now offered to your customers without any setup in BizBaby.
Common problems
- "Check the routing number". A routing number is exactly 9 digits, the ones in the bottom-left corner of a check.
- "That does not look like an account number". Account numbers are 4 to 17 digits.
- "This bank account is already saved". The customer already added it. They can pick it from their saved payment methods.
- "The verification information does not match." The code or amounts were typed wrong. The message says how many attempts are left. Amounts are under $1, typed like 0.32.
- The customer used all their attempts. The account is blocked. The customer removes it from their wallet and adds it again to start over.
- "We could not verify this account". Instant verification failed and nothing was charged. The customer can try again or use the deposit method.
